Ibiza 2013: The top 10 DJ sets

Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin, Disclosure and more all rocked it

All of the world’s best DJs have performed admirably in Ibiza this summer.
But every so often a DJ will drop a set that literally makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end.
With the biggest party on the planet now over for another year, let’s recount the most memorable sets of the Ibiza 2013 summer dance season thus far.

1. Laurent Garnier

Elrow
Privilege Vista Club
June 29th 2013
In true Elrow style, French experimentalist Laurent Garnier kept things candid and upfront for his three-hour set inside Privilege’s glass walled Vista Club. The result was a stomping, hypnotic techno journey that thrilled travelling dancefloor freaks and professional dance music aficionados alike. When you catch one of the best DJ in the world locked down ‘in the zone’, dancing becomes an involuntary action.

2. Damian Lazarus

Circoloco
DC10
July 22nd 2013
Packed with mysterious breakdowns, horns, flutes, trumpets, and haunting vocal reverberations born of another world, Damian Lazarus’ spellbinding performance at DC10 proves that you can drop esoteric cuts without losing the dancefloor. Filthy, fun and filled with fairytale feelings, catch Lazarus at DC10 if you like your tech-house infused with pure, uncut magic.

3. Tale Of Us

Enter
Space
August 8th 2013
North American duo Tale Of Us performed at Enter in August, wowing the peak time summer crowds with a dark, assured set that professional clubbers are still talking about today. Heavy with intergalactic synth leads, throbbing bass pulsations and spine tingling melodies, their sinister performance scores an educated line somewhere betwixt tech-house and measured free party acid.

4. Darius Syrossian

VIVa Warriors
Sankeys
June 23rd 2013
The VIVa Warriors opening party seems like a long time ago, but Darius Syrossian’s performance remains vivid in the memory. There were no hands in the air moments that night. Indeed, with Syrossian it’s all about shaking your ass, pumping your fists toward the dancefloor and pouting a jackin’, real house music styled smile.

5. Richie Hawtin

Enter
Space
July 4th 2013/August 8th 2013
Richie Hawtin’s spherically-shaped Enter night has had another successful season in Ibiza. Hawtin’s opening night performance back in July was truly epic, but the M-nus label boss went one better on August 8th set that felt as dark and gargantuan as the Space Discoteca.

6. Solomun

Solomun + 1
Pacha
July 7th 2013
Kicking off with the excellent ‘Games’ by German Brigante, which features Bane's back breaking vocal from the Dark Knight Rises, Solomun’s July 7th at Pacha also features the jerking funk classic, ‘Superman’ by Savas Pascalidis. A neat blend of techno hiccups and smart grooves, Solomun’s cheeky house music performance sent a rammed Pacha Main Room into deep spasm.

7. Marco Carola

Music On Pre-Party
Café del Mar
August 30th
Italian techno DJ and Music-On initiator Marco Carola has been attracting 5,000 plus crowds to Amnesia all season. But his intimate, hour-long performance on the Café del Mar terrace is equally memorable. Musically, Carola’s Café del Mar set was less industrial in tone, and the fact that he was playing to a select crowd made this late evening performance feel all the more personal.

8. Disclosure

We Love Space
June 16th 2013
A week after James Zabiela opened another We Love season in Ibiza, garage twosome Disclosure drew a giddier kind of crowd to the Space Discoteca. Using drum machines, samplers, synths and keyboards to craft their live mix, Disclosure belted out their back catalogue before an audience who just wanted to sing and dance.

9. Jean Claude Ades

Ants
Ushuaïa Beach Club
August 31st
The emperor of melancholy minor chords, Be Crazy records boss Jean Claude Ades’ vocal house set at Ants in late August was wonderfully deep and harmonious. Indeed, hearing Paper Aeroplane by Francesco Rossi pouring out across a sun-licked Ushuaïa Beach Club was one of the most righteous moments of the season. Listen to this when you get back home after a savage night out and absorb the encouraging grooves.

10. Maya Jane Coles

Hypercolour
Sankeys
August 5th
She’s dropped a number of top sets at Space this summer, but it was fascinating to see and hear Maya Jane Coles perform in the more intimate Sankeys Basement Room. Brimming with driving house and hypnotic techno cuts and spliced with garage elements, Coles’ moody set was mature enough to appeal to everyone, from Italian minimal lovers to hot house boppers who’d travelled all the way from Shoreditch with their bumbags.
