Sankeys Ibiza Opening Night 2013 In Review

When things are going well there’s always a temptation to rest on one’s laurels, and in a constantly evolving scene on an increasingly competitive island that just isn’t a mistake that any club can afford to make. But with a killer line up, a revamped venue, and years in the business, it was clear that Sankeys’ owner, David Vincent, wasn’t intending on falling into that trap.

Off the back of a hugely successful second season last year, thanks to residencies from Enzo Siragusa’s Fuse, Steve Lawler’s VIVA Warriors, Carnival and Solomun’s Diynamic Neon Nights, the first of the two opening nights of the White Isle spin off of Vincent’s famed Manchester club really stepped things up a gear, further cementing Sankeys Ibiza’s status as one of, if not the hot spot for cutting edge electronic sounds and high energised party vibes.

Upon arriving at the venue, at just gone midnight, I was amazed to see a 100+ queue waiting in eager anticipation– a sight I never saw at Sankeys last season. In the back of my mind, given that I was fresh off the plane from a 10 degree London and had vivid memories of spending many a sweaty night spent rammed into the Basement, I was a wee bit daunted at the prospect of dancing face to armpit in sweltering heat all night. But as soon we entered the club, any concerns I had immediately vanished.

True to Sankeys’ promise, the changes made around the venue have allowed for an “organic development of the venue.” The space feels so much more open now, despite still having to fight through peak time party people in the Basement on route to the cooler and less crowded realms of the Spektrum dance floor.

The high school-esque graffiti themed décor that runs throughout the club was particularly fitting for the predominantly English under 25 crowd. In their uniform of string vests, waxed chests, top buttons done up , shorts-come- gym knickers and garish '90s prints and jewellery, I couldn’t help but feel I had traveled back in time to an early '90s school disco as I enjoyed a drink on the refurbished terrace, which, with it feed from the Basement, now operates as another room in itself.

The Basement is where most of the cash has been spent. Whilst its is still an almost exact copy of the original main room of Sankeys Manchester, with its low ceilings LED cage and dark atmosphere, The Box has been transformed with a brand spanking new New York’s Anthem productions sound system with the room itself having been reconfigured with a 3D element. The result? Mindblowing and gut churning bass lines from multi-award winning Ibiza legend Steve Lawler and his ever impressive array of Warriors talent. The much hyped Darius Syrossian was undoubtedly one of the Basement crowd’s favourites as he put them through their paces as he took the sound system for a test drive. From the half an hour I caught of his Basement set, it is evident that his signature pure driving house basslines and devotion to the groove are by no means a thing of the past.

But what made the night so successful, and had many a tongue wagging afterwards was the Lab; a rarely used space last season and one I had yet to experience in its full glory. With its high ceilings, open planning, newly installed giant screens and overlooking balconies, it offers a perfectly stark contrast to the atmospherics of the basement.

Hosted by Troupe Records, the standout set of the night came from an eagerly anticipated performance from Finnenbassen who made his Sankeys Ibiza debut. Against a backdrop of mesmerizing visuals, the Norwegian set the dance floor alight with a typically soulfully nostalgic yet dirty deep house set. Euphoria struck when he dropped Electornica’s ‘Believe me’ featuring the hauntingly beautiful vocal sample from Moby’s classic “In this World”. From then on the crowd, which had swelled almost to the point of saturation, was hooked.

A hard act to follow perhaps? Think again. In true northern style, seemingly unfazed and nonchalant, burgeoning UK producer Hot Since 82 did what he does best, plunging straight into a highly energised deep house mix infused with enough forward thinking and enticing atmospheric sounds to move the crowd to another level. Showcasing his already impressive catalogue of remixes and original productions, it was strikingly apparent why Leeds’ hottest emerging talent has captured the hearts of the underground clubbing massive. His signature low end throb pulsated through his set with a relentless stamina, leaving the crowd hungry for more. Hot indeed.

All in all, an opening night that surpassed expectations. Now offering the complete clubbing package, Sankeys have really stepped up their game and have set the tone for the season. In the words of David Vincent himself, “The opening parties are just the beginning of it all”. We can’t wait to see what else in they’ve got in store.
