This Is Radio Tangier, Calling the World

The radio audience thought that it was a chance to learn about TALIM and the programs of the American Legation in Tangier.

Yes, my interview (stay tuned for podcast, though it will be in a mix of Arabic and French) on Radio Tangier was that.  But for me, it was a discovery of another historic landmark in this city.  And to learn that it was founded by an American.

The amazing Herbert R. Southworth, described by the LSE's Paul Preston, in the American Historical Association reprint of a Guardian article, as the "scourge of Franco" for his dogged determination to tell the truth about the Spanish Civil War, went on to Morocco in the aftermath of the November 1942 Operation Torch landings in North Africa.

Because of his knowledge of the Spanish situation, he was posted to Rabat in Morocco to direct Spanish-language broadcasts to Franco's Spain. At the end of the war, he decided not to use his demobilization air passage home but to stay in Rabat, partly to await the fall of Franco but largely because he had fallen in love with a powerfully intelligent French lawyer, Suzanne Maury. When both were free to do so, they married in 1948. Knowing that there were no controls on broadcasting from Tangier, Suzanne advised him to buy a quantity of U.S. Army surplus radio equipment with which he founded Radio Tangier. During that time, he traveled regularly to Spain in search of material for what would become the largest ever collection of books and pamphlets on the Spanish Civil War. The radio station was nationalized by the Moroccan Government in 1960.

Southworth moved on, but his legacy remains.  Soon after Moroccan independence, while the station was still in Southworth's hands, King Mohammed V visited the station.  The fading grey photo commemorates his 1957 visit, to honor the radio station whose shortwave broadcasts, from his exile in Madagascar, kept the king informed about the growing resistance movement in Protectorate Morocco which eventually brought about his triumphant return to the country in 1955.

Radio Tangier director Abdelilah Elhalimi tells of the coded messages contained in the radio's transmissions, which could pass the word from Tangier International Zone to Moroccans in the French and Spanish Protectorates, and beyond.

That international vocation continues.  Thanks to online streaming and satellite radio, Radio Tangier's audience covers the world.  Bahija Chaibi - my interviewer (photo at right) - told me that comments come in from the worldwide Moroccan diaspora; her nighttime broadcasts are appreciated by Moroccans in places like California, who are just starting their day.  At night, Radio Tangier becomes Morocco'sChaine Internationale, broadcasting to the world.

In the independence-era studios, a veritable treasure trove of recordings of broadcasts - all digitized, by the staff of Radio Tanger.  A music studio with two pianos - rare commodities in this town - and photos from a variety of Moroccan musical greats who have performed live over the years.  Most of Radio Tanger's programs are in fact live.

Tangier has always been an important radio location.  As Brian Edwards writes in Morocco Bound, stations like RCA, Mackay, and VOA were important Cold War assets.  Then there'sPan American Radio in postwar Tangier, run by another American.  But that will have to be another story. 

Revolution, King, and People: Morocco 1953

In this month of August, it's hard to keep track of all the holidays, whether religious (end of Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr) or national.  Today's "Revolution of the King and the People" day is the anniversary of the 1953 event that sparked a new stage in Morocco's struggle for independence, which came two years later.

Exactly 60 years ago today, 20 August 1953, the French Protectorate authorities deposed then-Sultan Mohamed V.  He and his family were sent into exile, first to Corsica, then to Madagascar.  The installation of a puppet sultan only further inflamed nationalist passions, and Mohamed V continued to militate for independence via broadcasts on Radio Tangier.  His return to Morocco in 1955 sounded the death knell for the Protectorates, French and Spanish.

In those days of Cold War across the globe, it was easy for both sides to see the nefarious hand of "international communism" or conversely "American imperialism" behind all events.  While the US, from the days of the Casablanca Conference in 1943, had kept lines of communication open with Mohamed V and indeed with Moroccan nationalists, it's hard to see any American role in the events of 1953.  Izvestia's accusation - "they want to convert (North Africa) into their chief base of combined operations" - was hardly justified by the US base at Port Lyautey (later Kenitra in independent Morocco).

Sixty years later, in a regional context of upheaval stemming from "the street" and its Islamist and military permutations, it is intriguing to consider Morocco's celebration of revolution (or reform) coming from the top.

Torna Love Family Park, il festival di musica elettronica che contraddistingue l’estate! Si riconferma anche per quest’anno la location di Hanau, inizialmente in forse per problemi legati alla quiete cittadina.

Il festival dura solo un giorno ed è programmato per l’6 luglio 2014. Tra i vari palchi allestiti per l’occasione si alterneranno i ‘soliti noti’ dello scenario elettronico internazionale regalando ore e ore di musica ad alti livelli.

Promotore, direttore artistico e ovviamente headliner della giornata sarà il mitico Sven Vath che si esibirà in una performance che durerà come minimo 8 ore, come negli anni passati. Un dj set strabiliante e ai confini della realtà, questo e molto altro è ciò che riserva il dj tedesco alla sua folta schiera di ammiratori.

Dodici ore ininterrotte di musica dalle 10am del mattino fino alle 10 pm, per una domenica diversa e sicuramente insolita.

Il Love Family Park si svolge in una piccola città della provincia tedesca, a quaranta minuti da Francoforte. Per arrivare basta prendere un aereo fino alla capitale della finanza internazionale e prendere un treno per la sede di svolgimento del festival.

Per chi non ha molti giorni di ferie e vuole vivere appieno solo la giornata del festival, molti club organizzano pacchetti in pullman per Hanau dalle principali città del nord Italia.

Il costo per un biglietto ‘regular’ è di 44 euro con prevendita, ma per vivere una giornata davvero completa, gli organizzatori propongono anche l’acquisto del biglietto Vip che include accessi privilegiati alle aree concerto, ai backstage e a ricevere un piccolo gift in omaggio.

Il Love Family Park è una festa a tutti gli effetti dove le droghe e gli eccessi non sono ammessi! Gli organizzatori infatti promuovono un progetto chiamato Alice  con l’obiettivo di far circolare informazioni sull’abuso delle sostanze stupefacenti ed aiutare le persone che hanno problemi.

The Street Parade is a demonstration in dance in favour of love, peace, freedom and tolerance. Our 2014Street Parade 2014 motto, DANCE FOR FREEDOM, focuses on freedom.

The personal freedom to live as far as possible without conventions and constraints is a great gift. But following one's inner voice is a constant challenge. It's often not easy to "be oneself". Let us try to listen more to ourselves, to our gut feelings, to our heart – but also to our minds. Let us work together for a peaceful world and live out our dreams, because only where peace reigns is freedom possible!

But freedom is also only possible where mutual respect and tolerance exist. Naturally, freedom does not mean that everything is allowed and that there are no rules: Freedom ceases to exist where others are restricted or disadvantaged by what we do. At the Street Parade, for example, we meet people who treat each other with respect and come together with tolerance. Let us enjoy the multi-layered, multi-faceted electronic music that has continued to develop in recent years like no other style of music and that has brought lots of new stars from the sub-culture to the hit lists.

 Sabato 19  luglio avrà inizio Il festival che è nato come un incontro di mecenati club Florida 135 , si è tenuta per la prima volta nel 1994 e oggi è diventato uno degli eventi più importanti della cultura europea elettronici. Monegros Festival 2013

The 19th edition of Spain's sandstorm of a fiesta will be headlined by none other than Underworld, Richie Hawtin, Vitalic, Feed Me and Public Enemy, whilst - at the time of writing - we're expecting one more headliner and another 50 artists to be confirmed! Leaving the coast behind us, Zoo Project Festival has truly returned to nature moving deep into a luscious British forest, at Boughton House in the county of Spires & Squires. On August 30th to September 1st, from 11am until 4am, the biggest names in electronic dance music, hosted by some of the world’s leading club brands, are joining us in the forest to unleash the animal inside us all and push the dance festival scene to new and unimaginable heights.

Taking place in Kettering, Northamptonshire, we are within a 90 minute drive of 80% of the entire country’s population, meaning even more of you can enjoy the party. We will be creating one of the most immersive and organic festival sites, offering an experience only Zoo can create, with over 65 confirmed acts across 10 stage hosts set deep within a stunning forest.

The music goes on for longer! That's right because we're moving into the depths of a forest we'll be going even later this year, with music in arenas starting from 12 noon daily and going on till 3am! That's 15 hours of electronic music a day!
