Ben Klock Being Boiled: The Funniest Take On Boiler Room Yet

Ben Klock Being Boiled: The Funniest Take On Boiler Room Yet

In the funniest (and strangest) piss take on Boiler Room since the Boiler Room Best Moments video featuring the famous Adolf Hipster comes Being Boiled. First up, German techno selector Ben Klock, who frequents bastions of serious underground music like Bergain, famously pumping out only the hardest minimal techno to dark clubs full of people likely dressed head to toe in black.

The concept is simple. Take Boiler Room footage and replace it with odd blips, bloops, animal shrieks, boinks and doinks, while the crowd emits faint cheering and the occasional sheep’s baa (I'll leave you to your own conclusions.) The best bit is that it's all perfectly cut to the crowd’s reactions, especially when it hits the 4-minute mark (hint: watch the kid in the white tee shirt). See for yourself below.

Here's hoping we see more of these, and that the artists involved take the joke for what it is. Or don't. We'll keep laughing either way.

Michael Woods tells Justin Bieber to "f**k off," ADE ramps up, and Skrillex joins Above & Beyond live

It was a busy weekend in the world of dance music, and it looks like the week is only set to get busier. Biggest news? Michael Woods gives Justin Bieber a big “f**k off” in the DJ booth for making a song request—and a fight reportedly ensues. Maybe if he’d just offered Woods $200,000?

- Michael Woods, it would appear, cannot be swayed by DJ requests, even if they come from Justin Bieber (hey—fair enough). Granted there was no money spoken of in the exchange, but when Bieber asked Woods to play some hip-hop tracks, Woods told him to “fuck off” and leave the booth. According to Woods, there was also a punch thrown by Bieber in the direction of Woods’ tour manager. (full story)

- Skrillex shreds! That’s right—the artist formerly known as From First to Last frontman Sonny Moore sat in on guitar with Above & Beyond the other night at their LA show for an acoustic rendition of their song “Black Room Boy.”

- Deadmau5, who wittily apologized to Woods for the actions of his fellow Canadian Bieber, has inked a deal with Astralwerks to distribute his mau5trap Recordings label and his own artist releases. The mau5trap compilation We Are Friends Vol. 2 lands on November 12.

- The Amsterdam Dance Event is just taking shape right now for a week of industry work and play. If you’re going, here are some lesser-known spots to hit up. (full story)

- Fittingly, Vibe has assembled a pre-ADE playlist of Dutch artists you should have on rotation in the leadup, featuring Tom Trago, Joris Voorn, and plenty more. Check it. (full story)

- And, just in case you get hungry while making the party and conference rounds, DJ Sneak, Seth Troxler, Ali Schwarz, and more are set to square off in a cook-off. (full story)

- And lastly, is a Random Access Memories deluxe box set on the way? (full story)

Ibiza 2013: The top 10 DJ sets

Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin, Disclosure and more all rocked it

All of the world’s best DJs have performed admirably in Ibiza this summer.
But every so often a DJ will drop a set that literally makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end.
With the biggest party on the planet now over for another year, let’s recount the most memorable sets of the Ibiza 2013 summer dance season thus far.

1. Laurent Garnier

Elrow
Privilege Vista Club
June 29th 2013
In true Elrow style, French experimentalist Laurent Garnier kept things candid and upfront for his three-hour set inside Privilege’s glass walled Vista Club. The result was a stomping, hypnotic techno journey that thrilled travelling dancefloor freaks and professional dance music aficionados alike. When you catch one of the best DJ in the world locked down ‘in the zone’, dancing becomes an involuntary action.

2. Damian Lazarus

Circoloco
DC10
July 22nd 2013
Packed with mysterious breakdowns, horns, flutes, trumpets, and haunting vocal reverberations born of another world, Damian Lazarus’ spellbinding performance at DC10 proves that you can drop esoteric cuts without losing the dancefloor. Filthy, fun and filled with fairytale feelings, catch Lazarus at DC10 if you like your tech-house infused with pure, uncut magic.

3. Tale Of Us

Enter
Space
August 8th 2013
North American duo Tale Of Us performed at Enter in August, wowing the peak time summer crowds with a dark, assured set that professional clubbers are still talking about today. Heavy with intergalactic synth leads, throbbing bass pulsations and spine tingling melodies, their sinister performance scores an educated line somewhere betwixt tech-house and measured free party acid.

4. Darius Syrossian

VIVa Warriors
Sankeys
June 23rd 2013
The VIVa Warriors opening party seems like a long time ago, but Darius Syrossian’s performance remains vivid in the memory. There were no hands in the air moments that night. Indeed, with Syrossian it’s all about shaking your ass, pumping your fists toward the dancefloor and pouting a jackin’, real house music styled smile.

5. Richie Hawtin

Enter
Space
July 4th 2013/August 8th 2013
Richie Hawtin’s spherically-shaped Enter night has had another successful season in Ibiza. Hawtin’s opening night performance back in July was truly epic, but the M-nus label boss went one better on August 8th set that felt as dark and gargantuan as the Space Discoteca.

6. Solomun

Solomun + 1
Pacha
July 7th 2013
Kicking off with the excellent ‘Games’ by German Brigante, which features Bane's back breaking vocal from the Dark Knight Rises, Solomun’s July 7th at Pacha also features the jerking funk classic, ‘Superman’ by Savas Pascalidis. A neat blend of techno hiccups and smart grooves, Solomun’s cheeky house music performance sent a rammed Pacha Main Room into deep spasm.

7. Marco Carola

Music On Pre-Party
Café del Mar
August 30th
Italian techno DJ and Music-On initiator Marco Carola has been attracting 5,000 plus crowds to Amnesia all season. But his intimate, hour-long performance on the Café del Mar terrace is equally memorable. Musically, Carola’s Café del Mar set was less industrial in tone, and the fact that he was playing to a select crowd made this late evening performance feel all the more personal.

8. Disclosure

We Love Space
June 16th 2013
A week after James Zabiela opened another We Love season in Ibiza, garage twosome Disclosure drew a giddier kind of crowd to the Space Discoteca. Using drum machines, samplers, synths and keyboards to craft their live mix, Disclosure belted out their back catalogue before an audience who just wanted to sing and dance.

9. Jean Claude Ades

Ants
Ushuaïa Beach Club
August 31st
The emperor of melancholy minor chords, Be Crazy records boss Jean Claude Ades’ vocal house set at Ants in late August was wonderfully deep and harmonious. Indeed, hearing Paper Aeroplane by Francesco Rossi pouring out across a sun-licked Ushuaïa Beach Club was one of the most righteous moments of the season. Listen to this when you get back home after a savage night out and absorb the encouraging grooves.

10. Maya Jane Coles

Hypercolour
Sankeys
August 5th
She’s dropped a number of top sets at Space this summer, but it was fascinating to see and hear Maya Jane Coles perform in the more intimate Sankeys Basement Room. Brimming with driving house and hypnotic techno cuts and spliced with garage elements, Coles’ moody set was mature enough to appeal to everyone, from Italian minimal lovers to hot house boppers who’d travelled all the way from Shoreditch with their bumbags.

Deadmau5 Gets Requested to Play A Bon Jovi Track for $200K

ED.: Don’t take this story for anything more than a slightly comical look at the ridiculousness that goes down behind the scenes of the entertainment industry.

An interesting, slightly off topic, yet still amusing story line has emerged today from the thralls of Las Vegas. The most expensive request of a song in history goes to the man who just cannot keep out of the news (not like he tries): DEADMAU5! Yes ladies and gentlemen, for $200,000, Joel Zimmerman will play Bon Jovi’s song “Livin’ On A Prayer.” Quite frankly, who wouldn’t?

On February 21, 2011, Deadmau5 was spinning his usual stuff at the club XS in Vegas at the Wynn Las Vegas and Encore Hotel Resort. In attendance was Don Johnson, CEO of Heritage Development and a huge highroller in Las Vegas, aka, someone who could easily pay $200,000 for Mr. Mau5 to play a song.

The talent agency, William Morris Endeavor, represents deadmau5. On the night of the incident, a WME agent, confusingly enough, also named Joel Zimmerman, met with Jesse Waits, co-owner and managing partner at XS, and met Johnson. Johnson made an offer to Zimmerman: if deadmau5 played a certain song he wanted, then he would pay him $200,000. Deadmau5 agreed and Waits told Zimmerman that Johnson could be trusted to pay the DJ if the deal went down.

It did. But no money was made, especially for Johnson, who was at the blackjack tables after the show, and losing badly. He asked his security to remove Waits and Zimmerman from his sight when they came to collect after the show. Johnson left Vegas the next day. Now here is the tricky stuff because you KNOW deadmau5 doesn’t just play Bon Jovi for free. WME’s main job is to keep their clients happy, especially since they have signed on many notable EDM artists and their revenue is helping the talent agency a lot. Waits told Zimmerman that he would pay $50,000 of the $200,000 owed and that WME would take care of the remaining $150,000. This all went down in 2011.

Now jump to June 2013, with Waits suing Zimmerman for failing to repay a $50,000 loan. But the main issue is that WME is angry at Waits for relying on Johnson and trusting him to pay the $200,000. See what happens when people take other’s “words” and don’t write things down, kids?

At the moment, both parties are reaching settlements.

Now for some levity, here’s Deadmau5 dancing to “Livin’ On A Prayer” and Johnson on stage with him on the right:

Closing Party Circoloco @ DC10

The memory of the last big day out at DC10 for Carl Cox in Circo Loco is still fresh in the mind, from the initial buzz as it went live and had over 300 likes in less than 5 minutes to it rapidly becoming our biggest ever story with just under 4,000 likes and multiple shares. There is no doubt about it; the Monday party is one of the hottest topics on planet dance, our video of the opening party has been viewed by 30,000 people! As we finally get towards the end of a closing party schedule that incorporated over 18 parties in 12 days, the dream team is set to drop but try and keep Emma, Nic and Keith from going to DC10 if you dare as we get set to say goodbye to the craziest party of them all for yet another season. We can’t help but wonder how many people will set eyes on this story, let alone like it, we couldn’t beat the previous record could we…

Well what a season it has been. 2013 has seen a marked change in the DJ line ups, residencies and parties taking place all over the island. Loco Dice has gone from being a successful underground techno DJ to having a residency at Ushuaia. Jamie Jones has turned Paradise from being a Hot Natured disco party into a Wednesday night phenomenon. And everybody is playing at everyone else’s parties. But while the Ibiza clubbing landscape is forever changing, one party has stayed the same for years, the party that takes place every Monday that brings the whole island together, where tourists and locals alike go to see and be seen. It is the equivalent of going to church on a Sunday and some might call it a Lifestyle – it’s Circo Loco.

Each week DC10 and Circo Loco announce the following Monday’s line up on Facebook and it is always met with gasps of joy, multiple shares and calls to rally the troops, buy your tickets and organise the guest list – we all have to go. The line up announcement for the Circo Loco Lifestyle Closing Party was no different, in fact the reaction, if anything, was more extreme. With the news that the party would carry on until midday on Tuesday and with the opening of the ‘Garden’ as a third room, the anticipation for the closing was high and clubbers were desperate for tickets. After some heavy negotiating with our bosses and promises that we would be absolutely fine for work on Tuesday, we got our names onto the guest list and jumped in the car. Our arrival at DC10 was marred by the swarm of mosquitos that appeared after the rain and tried to savage us, but a kind bouncer sprayed me with repellent and I was on my way. We had heard the bass pumping before we even got into the car park, but when we got into the Garden, the party was already going off. System of Survival were playing a belter of a set, dropping classic tunes by Cameo, Virgo and Underground Resistance and even a Chaka Khan remix thrown in for good measure.

We moved between the Main Room, Terrace and the Garden for quite a while, the choice of DJs to see was so good it was impossible to pick one room to stay in. We eventually settled in the Garden to watch Apollonia and the new decking was given a run for its money by the huge crowd not only occupying it but having a serious stomp on it, as Dyed Soundorom, Dan Ghenacia and Shonky shook the smoking area. The DJs that followed playing back to back in the Garden were so good, it was the sort of treat the closing party deserved. Jamie Jones back to back with Seth Troxler, followed by David Squillace back to back with Mathias Tanzmann, with Jamie and Seth just warming up for their next set which would come at 11am on Tuesday morning!

After the evening we had had so far we didn’t really think it could get any better, but we kept checking our watches and phones for the time, because at 4am on the Terrace something special was going to happen. Marco Carola was playing. Words can’t really describe the next few hours, but when the Music On boss hit the Terrace, oh my god, did the red room go off. The dirty thumping techno was spot on for this crowd and as the Terrace got busier, the music got harder and just when you thought it was all over, Maceo Plex came on. Maceo Plex has been one of our favourite DJs to see this year and it can’t be long before he has a residency somewhere in Ibiza. The techno he played was absolutely relentless. This was no time for excuses; Marco Carola followed by Maceo Plex on the Terrace meant we needed to be dancing right down the front in the thick of it. We were packed like sardines in front of the DJ booth but that did not make any difference to how good this party was. We weren’t so much dancing, rather the whole crowd moved as one, dancing shoulder to shoulder, heads down, arms in the air, stomping to these two massive techno DJs who have both enjoyed an amazing season.

Circo Loco 2013 closing party was really something special and it was fitting that it ended with something special. Both Resident Advisor DJs of the Year and successful label bosses, Jamie Jones and Seth Troxler brought the house down from 11am-12pm on the Terrace. The room was packed, no one was going home and neither were we, until Jamie dropped the last track and the whole red room applauded. You cannot compare Circo Loco to any other party, this party makes you feel as if you are part of something special and as our photographer remarked on the way home as we drove past the hoards of people leaving the building ‘it’s a lifestyle innit?’

Hipsters Distance Themselves From Deep House Claiming It Is “Too Popular”

Hipsters from across the globe are in a state of panic this week as it emerged that the current wave of popular “Deep House/Nu-Disco” club music is becoming “too popular.”
The panic comes mere weeks after EDM stars Tiesto and Steve Aoki’s shameless attempts to ingratiate themselves into the genre. “That was the nail in the coffin for me,” claimed London art-student Mo Curtis, pictured looking pensive as he receives the official news that Deep House is too commercial from the hipster high council. “I wasn’t even that into the music but when people like that are hitching their wagons to it you know it’s definitely not underground enough anymore.”
Berlin-based hipster, Kevin Jameson, echoed the sentiments of Mo and countless others around the world, “The music isn’t even the most important part of the music. It’s more important to be constantly looking for the coolest and most interesting new music,” he explained. “So that I can broadcast my interest in that music and then abandon it when it gets too popular. It makes me feel better than everyone else, and I love that.”
“Deep House has been good to me over the last few years. I was the first person to post a link to Without You by Art Department on my Facebook and I’ve been to loads of Hot Creations nights which I, thrillingly, got to boast to people about. I also got a lot of kudos for being the first of my friends to blog about Disclosure,” claimed Kevin. “And I got even more respect when I subsequently said that they were a bit too hyped.”
Discussing his plans for the future Mo claimed that he would stop listening to Deep House altogether and remove any evidence that he ever liked it from his life, “I’ve been here before so I know the drill. This is the third time I’ve had to alter my image according to what’s cool. The first time was when everyone got into Minimal Techno and then of course there was the Dubstep implosion of 2011,” he explained resignedly.
Mo went on to claim that over the next few months he would strive to find a new genre of music that is suitably unknown to take an interest in. “I’ve read about this eastern European kind of Klezmer/Gabba hybrid that is supposed to be awful. It’s made by two Communist ex-convicts using a Kaoss pad and a drum made from an old kettle and some sheepskin. It hasn’t even got a genre yet,” enthused Mo. “I really think it’s amazing but most people wouldn’t be into it.”

Juan Arnau Lasierra: renewal is the first rule to survive.

Often in this business we have the opportunity to talk with people who have written their small, personal page of history, but without making too much “noise”. They are those who “pull the strings” and often they prefer to leave the spotlight to their own creations rather than to themselves. It ‘s the case of the Arnau family, true forerunners of a certain type of clubbing in the Iberian peninsula and owners of renowned venues such as Florida135 and Row14 and, last but definitely not least, the famous Monegros festival, which is held annually in the desert and has become a reference point for all the european clubbing scene. Just a year ago thousands of fans, artists and experts gathered around the family for the death of its dean, the 85 years old Juan Arnau Ibarz, also friendly called “El abuelo techno” because of the innovation that has brought with its insights into the Spanish scene. We had the opportunity to have a chat with Juan Arnau Lasierra, which has since a long time the family inheritancein his hands and that has well-rounded told about his life and projects: starting from another (successful) edition of Monegros and his twentieth anniversary coming next year, up to the fate of the Row14 in Barcelona, Arnau family’s most recent gem, which, unfortunately, has announced its final closure on October 6, behind which there are big questions and much regret, especially by those that have lived and loved with passion that venue.
Can just your surname tell much of your story or is there something interesting that you want to tell us about your musical growth? Which was your first encouters with music and business?
Juan Arnau Lasierra. I remember my father taking me around Florida135 (our first club) when i was really young, and I remember seeing from my window the carpark from the club completely full of cars, buses and people coming from everywhere around spain (thats when I realize that what we had done in Fraga was much ahead of its time and what my father had done was quite unique. No one was playing techno in Spain at that time…) When I turned 14 I started going to Monegros and Florida135 every Saturdays so from a very early age I got exposed to electronic music and techno!
Being called Arnau in spanish night’s entertainment is not a small thing. Being part of a family that founded and directed some of the most famous clubs in the country (as well as festivals like Monegros) is a heavy legacy to carry on your shoulders or it facilitates the whole job?
To be honest its quite difficult, its quite a heavy load on your shoulders . In the end you feel much more pressure to do things right, you try to do everything the best you can to show that you can do things well. I try to keep on learning and making things better, but its not an easy industry. Its constantly evolving so you have to be very always on point.
The latest edition of Monegros took place a few weeks ago, getting another announced sold out thanks to the many names which featured live acts like Underworld and Public Enemy. Which were your favourite performances?
The Bloody Beetroots Live is always quite a show – I think they found a great way for an electronic band to do a live show. Vitalic and Feed Me for their visuals and Public Enemy cause its a classic.
Within the festival there was also a tent called “Meet the Artist” where people could get a autograph and take a picture together with their heroes in exchange for an offer to support Bridges for Music. How has the collaboration between you and this organization started?
I lived for one year in Cape Town South Africa. Valentino who is spanish but live in cape Town as well is a good friend of mine and he told me that he was creating this great project and that he wanted to do something at Monegros. So we tried to help him set up a stand and contact all the artists and see if they would be up for it. To be honest we did not have much time to organize it cause we had so much more stuff to deal with for the festival but luckily most of the artists were quite receptive and wanted to do it.
After all these years, what is the key to maintain Monegros always at the top of the European festivals’ scene?
Continuous change and evolution, the drive to surprise people no only regarding the artists that we are booking but also the venue and all you can do with it (decoration, stage design, stands), art performances etc…. The idea is to mix for 24h in the middle of nowhere with people from all over the world and have a good time. People make the festival incredible – they are the most important part of the equation!
Next year will be the 20th anniversary of Monegros. What are your expectations for the future of the festival? Will you keep the original format or you will seek some new aim to improve it?
We want to do something special, we always try to do thinks better and better every year, so we will try to surpise people again!
For the third year your absolute gem, the Row14, had a dedicated stage inside Monegros. How were you able to convey the great spirit of fun and light-heartedness that permeates the walls of the venue in Barcelona?
Actually its quite hard because Elrow is a closed venue so its easier for us to come up with a concept, decorations and performances.. so to take it to a much bigger format which is a festival it is quite hard… but for example we had the chance to meet this artist from South Africa who design stages decorations that we really loved so we included it to Elrow stage to give it a special feel… and we also get companies to perform as in the Row… I guess what also makes Elrow Stage special is the residents of the club, they worked hard for 4 years to get the loyalty of the crowd.
Just about the Row14, opened in 2009 and now become a fixed point in the European clubbing, in these days you announced its final closing on October 6th. I’d like to ask what were its origins. Was it born just as an after for the Florida135 or did you want to create something alternative for the city?
My family came to Barcelona 10 years ago and we were already looking for a special place to do something in the city of Barcelona. It took us a while but we found in Elrow what we were looking for something special, a little bit magic mixing music, theater, performances, just trying to give our clients the most unique experience… every event should be something different in a way…

Which are the reasons behind this end? Your words in the press that looked more like a “see ya” than a definitive goodbye. Can we expert to see Row14 maybe in another venue?
Yes, maybe, we never stope thinking, creating, and looking for specials things to do. We will continue “Elrow On The Road” outside of spain (Uk, France, Italy, Holland) for special events and at festivals and also every summer in Ibiza, this will continue. But unfortunately we won´t be continuing in Viladecans… where it all began.
I have personally experienced some wonderful moments in there. Once I even arrived directly by plane early in the morning and returned in the evening at home after the party. I have noticed the constant presence of clubbers coming from abroad. Being visited by so many foreigners during the year does make you proud of what you have created?
Yes its something special and unique. I have to say that this has been done thanks to all the people that have worked on the project – in the office and in the venue… A lot of effort by a lot of people. We could not have done it without the great team behind. But it was great to see people come from everywhere around Europe and sometimes all around the world and have fun all together in one place under the sun.
You have also created a weekly El Row night at Privilege, Ibiza. How did this collaboration come about?
We started 2 years ago, the director of Privilege at the time called us and offered the new room for a weekly event. We like the room a lot and it had a good capacity not too big not too small. Perfect to start a beautiful adventure on the white island.
The resident djs of Row14 have now become famous and they have played all around the world. Do you feel particullary proud to have offered space to local talents and making them world famous stars?
We did try to help them by giving them the opportunity to showcase their talents in our venue on a weekly basis, we gave them a platform to express themselves but the rest of the work came from them… they worked hard had home, in their studios, producing etc… and more especially every week to conquer the public.
Of course, in addition to the residents you also host many international guests. But I noticed that there is not a real musical target, so what requirements should have a dj to be invited to play at Row14?
At Elrow, we try to be open minded in terms of music, we don’t want to close ourselves to only one style of music. We look for any kind of artists that can connect with our public and keep their happy and dancing.
What are your plans for the future? Is there anything you would like to reveal to us about it?
We always have new projects, always have something in our heads, that’s the life of a promoter in this industry. You never stop, you always have to look for new ideas and see what is happening. In Barcelona we have started a new project, a new club called KER which will be a bit different. We have been working on it for a while – hopefully it goes well. Let´s see how it goes.

Amsterdam Convention Factory

Amsterdam Convention Factory

Amsterdam Convention Factory
Amsterdam Convention Factory

Joris Voorn.

Goldfish. Net zoals Amsterdam Convention Factory was De Overkant een Stork-fabriek.
